Roy is a city located in Weber County, Utah that was named after a child of a local school teacher who had died – Roy Peebles. The city was incorporated on March 10, 1937. With roughly 40,000 residents, Roy was settled by William Evans Baker in 1873 with the surrounding communities already established. Roy was known by different names in the past: Sandridge, Central City, Lakeview, Lakeview, and Basin.
Roy was the typical small city until the 1940s, with only a gas station, a café, a lumberyard, and some grocery stores comprising the business district. The city rapidly developed during World War II as it housed workers and personnel from Hill Air Force Base, the Defense Supply Depot, and the Navy Supply Depot.
In 1953, Roy received a charter for the first branch of the Bank of Utah, which opened the way for the establishment of other bank branches throughout Utah. Today, Roy is home to different businesses and services. It held the distinction of “Weber County‘s Fastest Growing City” in 1990 and 2010.
